Before you startA couple of steps use a hot soldering iron. Work on a heat-safe surface, keep the tip away from your fingers, and let it cool on its stand. New to soldering? There are great beginner guides on the project page.

Prep the pin headers

Get your little rows of pins ready so everything can plug in. Line them up and pop them into place β€” like sorting your LEGO before a build.

Put it all together

Snap the brain, the screen, and the keys onto the board. Each part has one spot and only fits the right way β€” take your time and press gently.

Give it a voice (solder the speaker)

Connect the speaker and its wires. This is what lets your keyboard actually make sound β€” no speaker, no music!

Power up!

Two ways to switch it on: plug in a USB cable and play right away, or add a small rechargeable battery to jam anywhere β€” no wires!

Battery safetyUse a single-cell (1S) 3.3–4.2 V 18650 cell. Double-check the + and βˆ’ are the right way round before powering on, and never bend or puncture the cell.

How does it work?

The keys sense the tiny electric charge in your body β€” so a gentle touch is all it takes. No buttons to push!

A tiny brain

The ESP32 chip listens to the keys and decides which note to play, thousands of times every second.

Maths that sounds like strings

It doesn't play recordings β€” it invents a plucked-string sound from scratch using clever maths. That's why it sounds like a harp!

Bring your own inputs

The kit breaks out an input connector, so you can plug in your own array of buttons, switches or sensors for a wider, wilder keyboard β€” no touch pads required.

Fun idea: play a fruit keyboard!Because the inputs are capacitive, anything a little conductive can be a key. Poke the input pins into bananas, apples or oranges and make music just by touching the fruit! See the classic banana-piano in action:
